Transform Olympic Spirit into Everyday Health | Proud of you

2024-08-08

As the world is now captivated by the Olympic season, we caught up with Kerri Xu, PR Manager, Brenno Castro, Sales Manager for Europe and Africa; and Lee Kwang Jin, Senior Sales Representative at Research Services at BGI Genomics. Their connections to the Olympics go beyond just watching the games on TV. Here's a glimpse into their favorite athletes, personal health journeys, and how the Olympic motto of “Faster, Higher, Stronger” influences their ways to stay healthy, and get some inspiration for our own health journey.

Q: Who is your favorite Olympic athlete and why?

Kerri: One of my favorite Olympic athletes is Quan Hongchan. Her “splash disappearing diving technique” is really impressive, and some people on the internet have even joked that they never understood diving competitions until seeing her performances. Her incredible muscle control and precise water entry angles show just how skilled she is and how much hard work she has put into her success.

Brenno: I don’t have a single favorite athlete. I support the sport, the athletes, and their achievements. I particularly enjoy watching Olympic gymnastics, swimming, artistic gymnastics, volleyball, and football. The diversity of these sports and the dedication of the athletes in each event are what truly inspires me.

Jin: I admire Malaysian badminton player Lee Chong Wei, who has participated in three Olympics. Despite never winning a gold medal, his perseverance and resilience, including his battle with nasopharyngeal cancer, are truly admirable. His journey reflects the spirit of continuous striving for excellence.

Q: How did you address your own health challenges, and what advice do you have for others?

Kerri: Last year, my health check revealed some abnormal liver fat levels. So, I adjusted my diet and increased the amount of physical activity to prevent any serious health issues. Now, I incorporate strength and aerobic training into my routine, exercising four times a week for 1-2 hours each session. Everyone is responsible for their own health. I encourage everyone to take charge of their health early by adopting a proactive mindset and getting regular check-ups to reduce the risk of disease. Simple daily habits like taking the stairs can benefit multiple parts of the body at once and are easy to do.

Brenno: To maintain my health, I focus on a balanced diet, avoiding sugary drinks and fried foods and ensuring adequate intake of proteins, carbs, vitamins, and fibers. Regular physical activity, including outdoor runs and indoor exercises, keeps my mind clear and my body fit. Understanding your nutritional needs and sticking to a consistent exercise routine can achieve long-term health benefits. Knowing exactly what your body needs is the key to stay healthy.

Jin: I use a smartwatch to monitor my health metrics and maintain a consistent exercise routine. My physical activity and health data help me stay motivated and ensure I’m on the right track. My advice to others is to use technology to assist with health management and set achievable fitness goals. Regular exercise and precise data can help me stay in my top condition.

Q: How does the Olympic spirit influence your health routine?

Kerri: The Olympic spirit of striving for excellence and overcoming challenges resonates deeply with me. Watching athletes like Quan Hongchan inspires me to push my own limits in my fitness routine. Adopting this mindset in everyday life helps us achieve our personal best and maintain a high level of health and wellness.

Brenno: The Olympic spirit motivates me to pursue a balanced and disciplined lifestyle. Athletes' dedication to their sports inspires me to stay committed to my health goals. Integrating the values of perseverance and excellence into my daily routine, I find greater enjoyment and fulfillment in my fitness journey.

Jin: The Olympic spirit is all about striving for excellence and continuous improvement. I bring that same attitude to my health and fitness regimen. Whether it’s through regular training or monitoring my health data, I aim to live by the motto of “faster, stronger, better”. This mindset keeps me motivated to improving and maintaining my health at its best.

These personal stories show that the Olympic spirit extends beyond the games, inspiring each of us to pursue excellence in our health journey.
